GRAY'S CROSSING FARMHOUSE
It was a really special experience getting to work on this one.
When a fellow Tahoe design professional asks you to help bring their own dream home to life, there’s a different kind of connection there. We spent a lot of time collaborating with the owners to make sure everything fit perfectly within the Gray’s Crossing design guidelines while still feeling personal. Honestly, it never really felt like "work"—it was just a great team coming together to build something they were proud of. By the time we finished, even the neighborhood reviewers were giving us a thumbs up.
The house is designed to feel open and connected. When you walk in, the foyer gives you a clear view straight through to the back, which really sets the tone. We put the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one big open space, adding a corner window that looks out over the best views on the lot. For privacy, the main suite has its own floor above the garage, and there are separate wings for guests and in-laws. We also tucked away a quiet studio that looks out into the woods, plus a few private patios where you can just sit and enjoy the Truckee, California fresh mountain air.

The story begins with a beautiful piece of land...
This site in Gray’s Crossing offered a great head start: a gentle slope for easy drainage, plenty of southern sun, and a backyard that opens up to protected green space. We wanted the house to sit naturally on the lot, so we worked with the existing trees and the shape of the land to create outdoor spots that feel private from the neighbors. It was all about making the house feel like it belonged there from day one.

SITE PLANNING
Every custom home build has its "must-haves." There were a few things the owners really wanted to get right.
We made sure the views of the nearby hills and trees stayed visible from both the casita and the main living room. They also needed a dedicated, quiet space for a dance studio within the 4,500 sq. ft. floor plan. Balancing those specific requests with the local building rules was a bit of a puzzle, working within the Truckee building requirements, but it forced us to be really intentional with where we placed the house on the lot. Every inch of the footprint was planned out to make sure everyone—from the owners to the local committee—was happy with the result.
Several versions of the modern farmhouse concept were modelled - seen here is the final version that was approved by Gray's Crossing Design Review Committee.
