A snow-country home addition shaped around access, structure, storage, daily use, and the realities of building in Tahoe Donner.
The existing home had reached a turning point. Years of Sierra weather, heavy snowfall, road exposure, and plow debris had taken a toll on the original carport structure. The clients needed more than a repair. They needed a better long-term solution.
We develop a major addition that included a new two-car garage, mudroom, main suite addition, exterior updates, and a rebuilt rear deck. The goal was to improve how the home works in every season while making the new work feel connected to the existing residence.
The project required careful coordination. Snow load, grading, front-yard setbacks, access, existing structure, and engineering all shaped the final solution. Massive roof framing was needed to support the snow demands of the site, and MASTRIDICASA worked closely with the project team and town engineering department to help move the design forward.
Several early concepts were explored before the right answer emerged. The process eventually came back to pencil and paper — a reminder that sometimes the best design tool is still the simplest one.
The result is a mountain home that works harder, lives better, and feels more prepared for the place it belongs.
EXISTING CONDITIONS - FAILED CARPORT
The original carport had finally given way after years of Tahoe Donner snow, road exposure, and plow debris.
That failure clarified the real need. This was not just about replacing a damaged structure. The home needed better winter access, protected parking, practical storage, improved entry, and a more durable response to the site.
In mountain homes, the problems are rarely isolated. Snow, structure, access, drainage, storage, and daily use all tend to meet at the front door.
PRELIMINARY CONCEPT SKETCH
The owners needed a garage, but the project quickly became more than that.
The design also needed to address a mudroom, main suite addition, exterior updates, site grading, and the relationship between new work and the existing home.
Several concepts were studied and rejected before the right direction appeared. That was not a failure of the process. That was the process doing its job.
Eventually, the work came back to pencil and paper. Slowing down helped clarify the answer: start with how the home needed to live, then build the form around that.
VISION TO REALITY
Once the direction was clear, the concept was modeled and developed into a buildable design.
The almost one-to-one relationship between the early model and the finished construction reflects the value of clear thinking before construction begins. Good visual studies are not just pretty pictures. They help test decisions, communicate intent, and reduce surprises later.
CONCEPT TO CONSTRUCTION
Moving from concept to construction required careful coordination with the existing residence, structural engineer, contractor, and town engineering department.
The new garage and addition pushed close to setback and grading limits, so the design had to balance what the clients needed with what the site and jurisdiction would allow.
This is where practical design matters: the drawing has to work on paper, in plan check, and in the field.
The main suite addition gave the home more comfort, privacy, and long-term livability.
The design had to connect naturally to the existing residence while working within the structural and roofline requirements of a snow-heavy Tahoe Donner site.
The goal was not simply to add square footage. The goal was to make the home work better.

The new mudroom changed the way the home handles mountain life.
In Tahoe Donner, an entry is not just a place to pass through. It has to manage snow, boots, coats, gear, storage, pets, groceries, guests, and everyday transitions between outside and inside.
The mudroom addition gives the home a more practical arrival sequence and helps the new garage connection serve daily life.
CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE
The completed project replaced a failed carport with a more capable, durable, and integrated addition.
The new garage, mudroom, main suite, exterior updates, and rebuilt rear deck work together to make the home more useful in every season.
The result is not just a larger house. It is a better-prepared mountain home.
