WALDEN HOUSE
This beautifully crafted Dennis Zirbel post & beam residence nestled amongst the Jeffrey Pines and perched perfectly on the knoll, enjoys sweeping views to the east over Floriston Pass, Juniper Hill and Mount Rose Wilderness Area.
MASTRIDICASA was commissioned to seamlessly expand the existing residence for a well-travelled and accomplished power-couple. Additional bedrooms, a proper guest en-suite, and an upstairs loft flex space, more storage, as well as a new deck, spa patio, and an update to various portions of the property - all while capitalizing on the million dollar view to the north looking out over Bronco Creek and Floriston Pass.
Through the design development stage, it became apparent what the owner really wanted - a wall of glass that brought the entire view and sky into the new addition. Midway through the design process, he sent a picture of a classic mid-century single story home with a wall of glass, and said "I want this in the back!" There was no debate, no trying to talk him out of it.
Back to the drawing board...
Solar studies were employed to carefully determine the proper amount of roof overhang to allow the winter sun in, and keep the hot summer sun out as much as possible. With the help of the structural engineers and the T24 consultant, the design-vision was realized with a minimum of steel and structural retrofitting required, all the while keeping the construction budget intact.
Finishing construction as of October 2024, final photos coming soon...

Tell the story, start at the beginning...
Every project should have:
-
A backdrop context image - full screen gorgeous image (https://unsplash.com/)
-
An existing site context - either a photo or GIS / Google Earth Aerial
-
A proposed site layout - usually take from your site plan drawing
-
Design development drawings:
floor plans concept style from Revit
perspectives
elevation exhibits in Photoshop
section exhibits in Photoshop -
Construction phase ?
-
Finished pics if available
-
A misc gallery
IF the images don't have good resolution, just photoshop them into groups of 2 or 3?

Starting with this beautifully crafted post and beam Tahoe mountain home, you immediately notice the asymmetry that draws your eye stage right to the sweeping views of Mt. Rose Wilderness area.
An open space to the right would be utilized to expand the footprint logically and efficiently.
EXISTING HOUSE

SITE PLANNING
The proposed addition honors the existing home's lines, and seeks to appear as though it was part of the original design. It would have been easier to tack the addition on with something that was simpler to frame and less costly, but at the expense of cohesion with the original design. Form usually follows function, but in this case, matching the aesthetics and flow of the existing residence came first.
