Residing at altitude is a double-edged sword - sitting on top of the world, you can almost see forever, but in the Sierra, massive snowfall will surely visit you, and sometimes, exploit construction flaws in a most insensitive manner.

Located just off the road and downslope of the snow and plow debris, this project involved navigating complex site conditions and environmental challenges.

Honest clients provide valuable feedback early, helping guide the project and ensuring alignment with their vision from the start.

Following a detailed brief, the design development phase began, setting the foundation for creative solutions and client approval.

First option - a resounding "no" from the client.

Second option - same answer. NO.

Third option - same answer. NO.

Clearing the board, taking a walk, and starting over for the fourth time, this time old-school - I found a quiet space outside and took out the paper and pencil.

Put everything on-screen, modelled it, and presented it to the clients.

Carefully designing the two-car garage, mudroom, and master en-suite to blend seamlessly with the existing residence, massive 16" roof joists were used to carry the 400+ pound snow load this address endures. Pushing the limits of the front yard setback and the resulting grading requirements, MASTRIDICASA worked closely with the town engineering department to arrive at a solution everyone could live with.
