WALDEN HOUSE
This beautifully crafted Dennis Zirbel post-and-beam residence, nestled amongst the Jeffrey Pines and perched perfectly on the knoll, enjoys sweeping views to the east over Floriston Pass, Juniper Hill, and the Mount Rose Wilderness Area.
MASTRIDICASA was commissioned to seamlessly expand the existing residence for a well-travelled and accomplished power couple. Additional bedrooms, a proper guest en-suite, and an upstairs loft flex space, more storage, as well as a new deck, spa patio, and an update to various portions of the property - all while capitalizing on the million-dollar view to the north, looking out over Bronco Creek and Floriston Pass.
Through the design development stage, it became apparent what the owner really wanted - a wall of glass that brought the entire view and sky into the new addition. Midway through the design process, he sent a picture of a classic mid-century single-story home with a wall of glass and said, "I want this in the back!" There was no debate, no trying to talk him out of it.
Back to the drawing board...
Solar studies were employed to determine the appropriate amount of roof overhang to let in winter sun and keep out the hot summer sun as much as possible. With the help of the structural engineers and the T24 consultant, the design vision was realized with minimal steel and structural retrofitting, while keeping the construction budget intact.

Starting with this beautifully crafted post-and-beam Tahoe mountain home, you immediately notice the asymmetry that draws your eye stage right to the sweeping views of the Mt. Rose Wilderness area.
An open space to the right would be used to logically and efficiently expand the footprint.
EXISTING HOUSE

SITE PLANNING
The proposed addition honors the existing home's lines and seeks to appear as though it were part of the original design. It would have been easier to tack the addition on using something simpler to frame and less costly, but at the expense of cohesion with the original design. Form usually follows function, but in this case, matching the aesthetics and flow of the existing residence came first.
