WALDEN HOUSE

A post-and-beam mountain home addition shaped around view, structure, solar orientation, and respect for the original design.

Set among Jeffrey pines and positioned on a knoll above Floriston Pass, the existing residence already had a strong relationship to the landscape. The challenge was to expand it without making the addition feel like an afterthought.

MASTRIDICASA was asked to help add bedrooms, a guest en-suite, loft flex space, storage, a new deck, spa patio, and updates to the surrounding property while preserving the character of the original Dennis Zirbel post-and-beam home.

As the design developed, one priority became clear: the addition needed to open itself to the northern view. The solution was a two-story glass view corridor that brings sky, trees, and distant ridgelines into the experience of the home.

That decision shaped the rest of the work. Solar studies helped determine roof overhangs for seasonal comfort. Structural coordination helped realize the glass wall with minimal steel and limited retrofitting. Title 24 coordination helped balance energy performance with the design intent.

The result is an addition that feels deliberate, connected, and quietly ambitious — open to the view without losing respect for the home that was already there.

The existing post-and-beam home had strong character, asymmetrical massing, and a clear relationship to the landscape.

Rather than compete with the original design, the addition needed to extend it. The open area to the side of the home offered a logical place to expand the footprint while preserving the view, entry sequence, and overall composition of the residence.

The goal was not simply to add square footage. The goal was to make the new work feel like it had belonged there from the beginning.

SITE PLANNING

The proposed addition was shaped by the existing home, the slope, the trees, solar exposure, structural constraints, and long views toward Floriston Pass and the Mount Rose Wilderness.

It would have been easier to attach a simpler form to the side of the house. But easier was not the right answer.

The design needed to honor the original lines of the residence, maintain a natural flow through the home, and create a stronger connection to the landscape beyond it.

In this case, cohesion came first. The addition needed to serve the function without breaking the character of the existing home.

During design development, the owners shared a clear direction: they wanted the new addition to open toward the view with a strong wall of glass.

That moment clarified the project.

MASTRIDICASA studied the idea through concept renderings, solar analysis, structural coordination, and design development. The goal was to bring the view and sky into the addition while managing heat gain, roof overhangs, structure, energy requirements, and construction cost.

The final concept balanced a bold view-facing gesture with the practical realities of building onto an existing post-and-beam mountain home.
