The Town of Truckee enacted the necessary legislation that allows homeowners to add an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their existing property.

MASTRIDICASA Architecture + Design was contacted by the owner of this property on Donner Pass Road opposite Donner Lake, and commissioned to design a detached garage for their residence, with an accessory dwelling unit above. The goal was to build a budget-friendly, utilitarian and efficient use living space within the limited square footage footprint. The design vision started completely different from the final design. While such a simple structure would seem to be a no-brainer, the opposite is often the case.

 

What you see in these drawings is the culmination of the design-collaboration with the homeowner - a two car garage below, with an ADU above, complete with a spacious bedroom and generous closet with lofted storage space, one bathroom designed for ADA usage, an open-plan full kitchen / great room with an alternate heat source, and upper level deck that looks out to Donner Lake.
